Two criminal groups are fighting amongst themselves amongst other for control of the drug trade on Christiania, and recent shooting incidents the past months have proven both deadly and dangerous, therefore the Copenhagen police have decided to maintain the zones currently in place.
A visitation zone means that the police can stop people on the street, on their bicycles or in their cars to check their possessions, search their bags and even a body search, if needed, may be done.
Under normal circumstances they are not allowed to do so randomly but must have a “reasonable suspicion”.
The aim of the visitation zone is to meet the local population’s safety and security concerns by, amongst other measures, ensuring that people in the area do not carry or possess weapons.
According to the police, visitation zones are effective measures in the police’s efforts to remove weapons from the streets. The past months’ the police have searched 1035 residents and found a total of 46 knives and 20 other arms, 34 residents have been charged with illegal posession of weapons.
Furthermore during the same time three locations have been closed and it is not permitted to enter these three gang locations:
Svanevej 5, 2400 København NV
Tømmerup Stationsvej 8B, 2770 Kastrup
Siljangade 10, 2300 København S

At the same time, the Copenhagen Police will continue their reinforced presence in both visitation zones.
Two visitation zones are established, one on Christiania and an area of Amager, another an area of Nørrebro/Nordvest. They will remain in place until the 6 November at 18:00.
The reason is that the ongoing conflict between the two gangs has given rise to an increase in violent actions, such as the shooting which took place in Pusher Street on Christiania last August resulting in the death of one person suspected of being part of the criminal conflict, but which also hit and blessed four innocent tourists, of which two were foreigners.
The Danish Police encourage foreign tourists and tourists in general to refrain from visiting Christiania and Pusher Street as in doing so they are putting themselves at risk of being the innocent victim of the ongoing conflict.
The visitation zone for Christiania and parts of Amager cover the area of:
Prinsessegade – Refshalevej – Forlandet – Kløvermarksvej – Raffinaderivej – Prags Boulevard – Strandlodsvej – Lergravsvej – Østrigsgade – Øresundvej – Amagerbrogade – Christmas Møllers Plads – Torvegade – Prinsessegade
The visitation zone for parts of Nørrebro and Nordvest cover the area of:
Mågevej – Glasvej – Frederiksborgvej – Bisiddervej – Lygten – Tagensvej – Rovsingsgade – Vermundsgade – Lersø Parkallé – Jagtvej – Tagensvej – Blegdamsvej – Fælledvej – Nørrebrogade – Peblinge Dossering – Åboulevard – Ågade – Jagtvej – Borups Allé – Mågevej

Knives not allowed in the visitation zone – find out more below.
If you are not yet aware of it, then take note not to bring even a small pocketknife when you are in the visitation zone area.
Also in public areas, at any time, small pocketknives such as those used with a bottle opener below 7 cm are only allowed if they can be said to have a valid reason for being in your possession, for instance you are going on a picnic.
In general, you are not allowed to carry knives in a public area.
Even small pocketknives, below 7 cm, are not allowed when you go out during the evening to a nightclub, restaurant, coffee house or any other public area during the night, what the Danish police call “generelt knivforbud i nattelivet“.
