The mounted squadron of the Gard Hussar Regiment is in Copenhagen for the official reception of the President of Iceland on Tuesday 8 the October. The Danish King and Queen will greet their guests as they arrive at Nordre Toldbod by boat and they will be taken by carriage to Kastellet and afterwards to Amalienborg Palace.

It is public and open event, and the sight of the horses and their riders in gala uniform is quite spectacular and something not to miss while you live in Denmark.

During the rehearsal ride they will be in their usual work uniform and not the gala one and the accompanying carriage will be without the royals but with employees of the Royal Stables.

For the official rides on Tuesday morning they will be in full gala . They ride from the Royal Stables at Christiansborg at around 9:30 to arrive at Nordre Toldbod at around 9.45.

At 10:00 they must be ready to take the Danish King and Queen and the President of Iceland, HE Halla Tómasdóttir, and her husband, Mr. Björn Skúlason after the official greeting to Kastellet ( The Citadel) for a wreath laying ceremony at 10:20 at the Monument at The Citadel.

At the end of this ceremony, they will escort the coach to Amalienborg for the official reception at Amalienborg at 10:50 at Christian VII’s Palace at Amalienborg.

After they have delivered their guests, the coach and mounted guards ride back to Christiansborg – so yet another opportunity to see them just without passengers this time.

You can find the map of the 2 routes here.

There are ample places to watch them along the routes, however, if you want a good position at Amalienborg Palace you need to be early, it is a popular event for both residents and tourists.

HAVE a sneak peek preview inside the stables

Read also our article on what goes on inside the stables as the horses and riders are preparing to leave – they even have a nail manicure! Great photo-reportage here[/infobox]

In this small photo report below you can see what a rehearsal parade looks like when they leave Christiansborg Castle. This one is from a past carriage and escort rehearsal.

They are a grand sight as they take position in front of the old stable buildings awaiting departure.

When they are here with the full guard of 50 riders, they are a long parade and at the end of course the modern version of the stable boy picking up the horse droppings!

Did you guess what the little green van was for? Of course, a modern waste treatment van is used to pick up what the horses might have dropped!
